Social outreach

St. Peter’s by the Lake has made an effort to be sensitive to the needs of the people in our area and in our country. Reaching out to people in need is a part of our calling as Christians. As Jesus saw to the needs of the people around him we too are called to reach out. At St. Peter’s there are two main Outreach Ministries that we are involved in:

More information about this as the winter months approach.

1. St. Peters Childcare Project

This is a Foster Care Project for children affected by the HIV/Aids pandemic. The project was started by a small group at St. Peter‘s and developed into an independent non-profit-organisation. At present, we care for 29 children in 7 homes: Two in Douglasdale, two in Westdene, two in Northrand and one in Braamfontein. St. Peter‘s by the Lake Congregation sees this as their Outreach Project. We have members from our congregation on the committee that run this project. We are also responsible for the spiritual care of two homes.

2. Jan Smuts Access – interdenominational soup kitchen

Old man

This is a project for the homeless in our area which is run by the churches in the Jan Smuts Axis area of Johannesburg. We make our premises available for this project every Wednesday, where up to 120 homeless people gather on our premises.

3. Project in Kenya – MDH

On Sunday the 20th July 2008 we sent Dr. Olaf Förster to Kenya with our blessing and support. This project has now grown enormously and over 10 000 patients are being treated each year. They have a “Food for Work” program running at the moment and it is supplying food for more than 600 people. This is very necessary at the moment as Kenya is in the midst of a 3 year draught. We are praying for rain and for the situation to normalize.

The supply of water to the community has become an absolute necessity in the current situation and people gather all day with their 20 liter containers. This clinic in the bush of Kenya has become a fountain of hope for the communities in the area.

We want to keep in touch with Olaf and support the work he does. I am on the board of MDH-Africa (Medical Direct Help Africa), the organisation that was set up in Germany a few years ago and that is running this project. Visit the website for more information.
